SYMBIOSIS

  1. Kutay raised some questions about the idea of symbiosis
    • The term symbiosis literally means 'living with' (translated from Greek).
    • It is interesting to read (this pdf version of) Ivan Illich's book Tools for Conviviality because he defines the word 'convivial' (translated from Latin) with the same meaning.
  2. Our synergy research was an attempt to think beyond the traditional idea of design
    • Synergy could be seen as a kind of 'symbiosis' for inanimate things.
    • The ecological idea of (keystone species) inspired the idea of metadesigning
    • So if we can design keystone synergies - would they attract other synergies?
  3. Is the idea of holarchy in teams possible/desirable/useful?
  4. Western society has become very individualistic, as do some the economic arguments underpinning capitalism:
  5. Structural coupling occurs in symbiosis
    • This is where living organisms that work together also grow together.
  6. The idea of sympoiesis was intended as a symbiotic version of autopoiesis
  7. See John's idea of four-fold consciousness
